Key to understanding change — understanding paradigms

Definition — paradigm? (According to Webster’s) A model or a pattern

According to Barker:

Any set of rules and regulations that do:

  1. define boundaries or establish limits (model)
  2. tells you have to behave inside the boundaries to achieve success (pattern)

 

Measure of success:

The ability to solve problems that exist inside the boundaries (What problems have you solved recently?)

Paradigm synonyms:

Theory (can be challenged), standards, protocol, routines, rules of thumb, traditions, superstitions, rituals, doctrine, dogma (proven by faith)

We need paradigms — bring order, predictability, helps to prioritize, filter out unnecessary data.

Careful over time —do their job too well!

Paradign effect test: Add these numbers

(On screen undovered one at a time) 1000, 40, 1000, 20, 1000, 20, 1000, 10

What happened? Most said 5,000 (answer: 4,100)

Powerful paradigms are — comfortable — trust our lives to them.

Two ways that our paradigms work against us:

  1. Deny that we have them — blind
  2. Not willing to accept others’ have different paradigms that might be just as valid as ours

 

  • Your organization is a forest of paradigms (cultures)

 

Tress: Departments or units that have set of rules, set of boundaries:

Accounting, Sales, Legal, Operations, Development, Production, Marketing, Logistics

Know boundaries and what to do inside the boundaries

Environmentalist — change one tree and somewhere it will affect everyone — ripple effect.

Inter-related — inter-connected — ties together — difficult to build corporate culture — difficult to build to be healthy

Total Quality — changing the soil — and changing the entire institution

Paradigms — natural result of search for order

Working well — in control — independent — protected from events — truth is inter-dependent — part of forest of paradigms

  • What happens when an old paradigm is replaced by a new one?

 

Everyone goes back to zero!

No matter what market share was, what assets are, most disappears!

Just because you were dominant in the old paradigm, guarantees nothing in the new paradigm! It is as if the race starts over again

Dominance of old — problem in the new!

Individuals — heroes in the old, now cannot adopt quick enough

Collaspe of Soviet Union — now new paradigm for US military

  • How do we deal with paradigm shifting?

 

First — honor their fears

So devastating that many organizations do into denial!

Willingness to accept maybe it can be done!

 

Once you give yourself permission to think about the obviously impossible — you are on your way to shaping your own future.
