Updates and Informations for Workshop #4

At the Project Conveners' meeting on October 28, several issues were discussed. WorkSpan has taken action on several of them and, in conjunction with the Kellogg Foundation, is proud to announce the following decisions

The Foundation will invite each project to send an evaluator to Workshop #4. The LINC projects will cover transportation costs and the Foundation will cover all room and meal expenses, the same as other participants.

Since the remaining three workshops are on the coasts, the Foundation will cover a third night's hotel expense when necessary for the participants. This would be especially for the west coast participants for #4 and #5 (probably Sunday night) and for the east coast participants for #6 (probably Wednesday night).

The Foundation will negotiate a lower hotel cost for all LINC people if they come early to take advantage of lower airfares for a Saturday night stay. (Note that the projects will still have to cover a Saturday night stay, but it will be at a lower rate.)

The LINC Workshops will be held at less expensive hotels, maybe even airport hotels, to cut down on ground transportation costs. The emphasis of the workshops will be on experiential learning so the hotel accommodations are not as important as originally thought.

Wednesday noon meals will be provided for everyone; Monday noon meal will only be provided for project conveners and project evaluators.

The Foundation will invite FSPE Project Directors to the remaining Workshops, #4, #5, and #6. The FSPE projects will have to pay transportation costs, but the Foundation will pay for room and meal expenses, the same as other participants. At this time only the FSPE PD's can fill this slot. FSPE PD's must agree that they will be active participants of their LINC project while at the Workshop. They will take part in all activities including home team meetings, as well as the Workshop itself. They cannot be spectators or non-active participants. They must learn about their sister LINC project and be able to report on what the LINC project is doing and learning, the same as all the LINC participants.

Facts About Change (Association for Quality and Participation - AQP - 11/98)

  • Change is more complicated, expensive and time-consuming than we imagine.
  • Change is more complicated to sustain than to initiate.
  • People at all levels have spent years preparing not to do this.
  • If it is worth doing, it is worth doing slowly (Mae West.)
  • More information and more skills are hardly ever the solution.
  • New Efforts almost always rely on old resources.
  • Successful change seldom starts at the top.
  • Learning is essential to change...those who change learn.
  • Change efforts always accomplish something different from what we intended.
  • The most engaging change is so compelling that success seems secondary.
