  1. All participants arrive at the beginning and stay until the end of the workshop. All sessions will start on time, utilizing self- systems theory to promote maximum engagement.
  2. Participants arrive well prepared and are familiar with previous workshops and the Bosserman model for change.
  3. Participants are ready to be engaged, being well grounded in their project’s change and leadership initiative.
  4. Conversation will be meaningful and respectful. Participants will use active listening skills and reflective opportunities effectively.
  5. Workshop #5 is a catalyst for the work to be completed at home.

Purpose

The purpose of LINC Workshop #5 is to focus on the leadership necessary to promote and support an engaged institution as defined by the Kellogg Commission report "Returning to Our Roots: The Engaged Institution." The challenge, as stated in the report, is how to redesign "teaching, research, and extension and service functions that are sympathetically and productively involved with the communities universities serve, however community is defined." (Chapter 2, page 11, http://www.nasulgc.org.Kellogg/engage.pdf)

Themes

Three themes within the engaged institution umbrella include:

  • Power Dynamics and Civic Mission
  • Leadership Models
  • Inter-institutional Collaboration

Each theme will be addressed through a "learning stream" during the conference, with each stream informed by the integration of pubic art and the resources and experiences brought by the participating institutions, Evergreen State College (our host site), and WorkSpan.
