FSRD is one of four programming areas at
the Foundation. Two initiatives focus on food systemsIntegrated
Farm Systems and Food Systems Professions Education. The other twoManaging
Information with Rural America and Mid South Delta Initiativefocus

Food
Systems
FSPE is one of the two food systems program
initiatives. This initiative is designed to help higher education institutions
develop collaborative models that link education with stakeholder groups
to support healthy and viable food systems and connect them to the communities
they serve. Universities and their partners work to enhance the education
of food systems professionals and prepare them to handle future food
systems issues.
IFSINTEGRATED
FARM SYSTEMS INITIATIVE
IFS is the other of the two food systems
program initiatives. IFS deals directly with developing and promoting
sustainable agriculture, including projects that explore the long-term
implications, consumer behavior and public policy impacts of environment,
conservation, health and food access. This initiative has supported
projects which are community-based demonstrations of sustainable systems
and linked these projects together through a national IFS Network.
Rural Development
MIRAMANAGING
INFORMATION WITH RURAL AMERICA INITIATIVE
MIRA is one of the two rural development
initiatives. This initiative focuses on people in rural communities
and their participation in building their own community development
capacity and connects individuals, communities, and organizations to
help them work together in new and different ways. MIRA fosters rural
community economic development through information and technology tools.
MSDIMID
SOUTH DELTA INITIATIVE
MSDI is the other of the two rural development
initiatives. The initiative focuses on 5 contiguous counties and parishes
in eastern Arkansas, western Mississippi and northeastern Louisiana
which share common geography, history, culture, resources, challenges
and opportunities. MSDI is based on a shared vision to strengthen the
capacity of Delta communities to create or increase their own economic
opportunities.
