Videos: Mifflin County Gardening Project
Through a partnership between the Mifflin County probation office and the PA
Extension Offices, juvenile offenders are participating in a new project that
is both good for them and their community. The Mifflin County gardening project
is a community service project that teaches gardening skills. The project has
expanded from a small summer garden to a year-round program that includes a
much larger summer garden and a variety of gardening projects throughout the
county. Many of the youth on probation who are assigned to this project for
their community service time are learning about agriculture, but more
importantly, they are learning life skills such as responsibility and
goal-setting. Equally important, the community is developing a new, more
positive perspective of the youth in the program. (view video)
The Adventures of Patty Melt and Friends: A Fun and Educational Program
about Food Safety The Keystone 21 project has developed a traveling
workshop designed to teach elementary school children about meat safety issues.
"Patty Melt" is a character who, along with her friends, teaches children about
the four Cs (Cool it, Clean it, Cook it, and don't Cross it) of safe meat
handling. This presentation uses teacher and student participation, as well as
a prepared video and rap song. The program has been performed in over 175
school districts for more than 50,000 children. Awareness of food safety
principles has been increased among the students and participating teachers.
