Agricultural Sciences Magnet School
Planning is now underway, thanks to a Nebraska Network 21 grant, for a unique agricultural sciences magnet school in rural Nebraska. Fortunately, a rural public high school in Nebraska is doing its part to prepare tomorrow's agricultural leaders, with support provided from Nebraska Network 21 and the University of Nebraska. Mead High School in Mead, Nebraska is the first rural agricultural sciences magnet school in the country. Mead has added 16 new agriculture-related classes, providing hands-on learning and targeted course work. As a magnet school within a public school, students who complete the agricultural sciences curriculum will have completed all requirements for high school graduation and all college entrance requirements. Mead provides the class curricula and materials to other nearby schools via distance education.

Web Publishing
With a mini-grant from the Nebraska Network 21 project and support from other partners, seventh grade students in Taylor, Nebraska are joining the information age. These students have received computers and training to develop a "town web site," which showcases their small, rural community. Students have learned web site development and important computing skills as well as business skills, such as selling advertising space on the web site to local businesses. The class also learned how to secure a small business loan to purchase additional computer software using collateral such as their ponies, school jackets and bicycles. Located in the poorest county in the nation, students have seen how a new business can both provide employment within their community and contribute to economic growth.
